According to Barker, Justice is the synthesis of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. The principle of Liberty does not conform to the principle of Justice unless the benefit of liberty is equally extended to each individual in the society. Liberty has to be qualified by the principle of equality. The inherent contradiction of absolute liberty can be resolved by the principle of equality. Any restraint on the liberty can be justified on the ground that it is in the interest of Justice and Equality. Liberty is the first condition of Justice and Bondage is always regarded as unjust. The struggle for equality starts when there is a condition that the prevailing inequality is unjust and based on exploitation.
Liberty, equality, and justice are not isolated, they work together to shape a fair and democratic society.
1. Liberty without Equality leads to injustice –
If only some people have liberty (say, freedom of speech or property rights), and others are excluded due to poverty, caste, or gender, then liberty becomes a privilege, not a right.
2. Equality without Liberty can become oppressive –
If the state enforces strict equality (like forcing everyone to live the same way), it might restrict individual freedoms.
E.g., banning private property or limiting free expression.
3. Justice is the balance between Liberty and Equality –
Justice helps reconcile the tension between liberty and equality.
“Liberty and equality are the two pillars of justice — neither can stand alone, and justice ensures that both are applied fairly to create a just society.”
